How much tension is on a guitar neck
I finally sold it fearing that I would break it. Dadocaster , May 24, Age: 65 Messages: 18, Messages: Still, I wouldn't plan on having a single guitar to go from standard tuning to heavily dropped tuning such as the Ab you mentionned.
You would be better with one standard tuned guitar with thinner strings and one heavilly dropped one with very large strings. This or as already mentionned, buy a baryton and a capodastre.
QReuCk , May 26, Bllazing , Jun 2, Messages: 8, I'm concerned the posts will fail at the bridge, before the neck can't cope. Also, if you have the Micro Tilt engaged just a little, the bolts holding the neck on might pull out. All before the neck fails; way before. What Mabley said about the frets, as well. Well, you can actually see that happening sometimes: you tighten up one string and the others go ever so slightly flat tightening one has pulled the neck, shortening L and decreasing T. But it's so small that after a few iterations it converges. I believe you don't have to worry about the string tension too much if you're using light to medium strings.
It's when you are using heavy, extra light strings, or alternative tuning with heavy tension is when I think you have to be careful. As Bern has said, the maximum and minimum string tension should be listed from the manufacturer. Originally Posted by DanPanther. Originally Posted by Bern. Shask , Feb 15, Messages: 17, Likes Received: 7, On wound strings? It depends on the core thickness. Steel strings have a tensile strength of 2. Or, if you want to try a cheap string, try it out and see what happens. The other issue, as Shask mentioned, would be placing too much tension on the neck, and that depends on the thickness of the neck, the type of wood and the reinforcement, etc.
If you have an Ibanez with a really think neck, this could be a problem. I mean, acoustic guitars handle more tension, but they are designed to handle more tension. The final issue is the harm you are going to do to your fingers.
